I have been practicing art as long as I can remember--a self-proclaimed artist at 5 years old. I always seemed to be attracted to drawing people. From stick figures in my earliest memories, to creating my own Archie comic characters; giving them my favourite names of the moment, and creating long luscious locks of hair — hairstyling and fashion design were my other areas of interest — in my youth. Then, on to referencing photos of fashion models in magazines, and my favourite musical group, The Beatles, in my teens. That was right around the time I realized, “Hey, I’m actually kinda good at this...”, and so I continued to draw regularly. Pursuing a post-secondary education in art was an obvious path for me. I attended and graduated from art school (New Brunswick College of Craft & Design) in N.B. in 2004, with a Diploma in Visual Arts, majoring in Creative Graphic Design.
Having developed a keen eye for detail at a young age, all my work is rooted in realism, while still feeling like a painting. My paintings are mostly centered around the figure and portraiture, with forays into still life and other elements I am drawn to: stunning light, interesting reflective colour and shape, alluring atmosphere, and beyond. I always say, “I am inspired by the beauty around me, pulled to paint whatever grabs my attention.” Sometimes a theme brews in my mind that I want to bring to life, other times I just need to paint what I see, and give it new life in paint.
My medium of choice is oil paint. Since picking it up in 2015, I can’t get enough of the feeling of pushing and pulling it around with my brushes. No other medium has kept me so mesmerized with the process and its results. Other mediums I enjoy occasionally are watercolour, gouache, soft pastel, and classic graphite.
I am currently building a body of work, and finding ways to get my artwork seen through social media and participating in art shows. exhibits, and markets, as well as accepting commissions when I’m able to. I currently live in Airdrie, Alberta with my spouse, Victor, and furry studio assistant, a Toy Aussie named Vada!
